Extra Credit Experience
Hawk Watch is a totally free and super cool opportunity for you to earn some serious extra credit before semester grades! Here is what you will need to do:
1.) Attend one of the Hawk Watch Days at the Wildlife Research Institute before Finals week.
- Saturday Jan. 12th @ 9:00 am
- Saturday Jan 19th @ 9:00 am
2.) Watch the presentation and explore the Wildlife Research Institute
3.) Answer the Questions on the Worksheet and Follow the directions to complete the assignment
Here's what you'll get if you turn your assignment in on or before Tues. Jan 22nd:

Group Study Guide (Semester 1)
Due date: Friday Jan 18 before midnight (Will be posted online Saturday before finals)
Each group of 3-4 persons will prepare a two-page outline of the topic selected. This outline must be typed. It will be put on the class website for all class members so it should be as correct and complete as it can be, given the space restriction. Date, title, chapters and labs covered (if any), and author’s names must be at the top of the page. Typeface must not be smaller than 10pt. Margins must be 0.7 or more. You may include simple diagrams with captions/explanations if appropriate.
When turning in group work:
- Title the email with the topic and chapter
Attach work as a word document not as the body of email
Title attachment with topic and chapter
1 attachment with all work from 1 person please (not multiple attachments from multiple people)

General outline form is to be used. Outlining allows one to quickly see the headings, subheadings, etc so that information can be easily placed in context. This and related pictures (with explanations) should take up about 1-2 pages. The outline should cover all major topics/steps in that unit and include the major points for each of those topics/steps.
Page 3: Quiz
In addition to your review sheet, you must also write or select 10 multiple choice questions on your topic. Each question should have A-E answers.
Page 4: Answer Key and Bibliography
1. The answers on a separate sheet of paper.
2. Each answer should have an explanation
3. Bibliography of all your sources in MLA format

This rough draft should include:

Chi Square Analysis (Goodness of Fit Test)
Chi Squared Analysis is a statistical way of determining if a set of data should be "statistically trusted" or not. Today in class we will be learning how to solve a chi square test for a data set.
Agenda:

1.) got to Bio. Lab Bench Website
2.) Go through the lab (some info in new and may be confusing if you rush. Do the best you can)
3.) Complete the lab and do the Quiz at the end. Show me your score for credit. (If you did not finish in class and still need credit you can write out the questions and answers or email me a screen shot of your quiz with score)

- Please print out 2 copies (not hand written)
- Do not turn in the same list as your friends (each list should be unique)

Watch Bozeman Video "Rules of Multiplication and Addition" be prepared to ask questions and do genetics problems that ask you to solve these types of problems.

Computer Lab & Review Day
- Today we will be meeting in class then going to the computer lab for a Virtual Meiosis/ Mitosis Lab and Review day.
Today's Assignment:
Part 1: Mitosis
1.) Go to The Meiosis/ Mitosis Lab on Biology Lab Bench Website
2.) Read the introduction and click Next to begin
3.) Go through the Lab Review at your own pace.
4.) Once you get to "Lab Quiz 1" take the quiz and check your answers. Once you get your score call me over to review your answers and receive participation points for the lab. (Do not move on until I have given you points for the quiz)
Part 2: Meiosis
5.) Meiosis is a new topic. Go through his section carefully.
6.) In your notes make a quick sketch of the stages of meiosis. Make sure to note what is happeing in each phase and how it is different from mitosis.
7.) Crossing over: What is it and when does it happen? How does this process add to genetic variation?
8.) If you are moving quickly and have plenty of time left in the period complete the "Design of the Experiment II"portion of the lab. If not use the table of contents to move ahead to the "Comparison of mitosis and meiosis" questions.
- Answer these questions (Questions answer format/ complete sentences). These will be stamped tomorrow in class. This should be completed as homework if not done in class
9.) Complete the Self Quiz 2. If you finish it today in class you can receive extra credit as long as you call me over to see the score before moving on.
